Super Bowl LIV: Chiefs v 49ers
In a surprise comeback, the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in the 54th Super Bowl. In addition, Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes earned the Super Bowl MVP. “It’s this team. We have heart,” Mahomes said following the 31-20 win in Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium. “Coach [Andy Reid] pushes us to be the best people we can be and never give up. I’ve been waiting to say it my whole life: I’m going to Disney World.”
His statement echoes a tweet he made back in 2013. He was also the youngest quarterback to be named Super Bowl MVP, joining Tom Brady as the only people younger than 25 to do so. In the fourth quarter of the game, Mahones helped his team erase a 10-point deficit to take the title. “I knew we weren’t in the ideal situation. I believed in my defense to get stops, and they did,” Mahomes said. “Then the guys kept believing in me and kept making plays downfield, and we found a way to win.”
James Click Named New Astros GM
The Astros named former Rays exec James Click as its new GM on Monday. “I am excited to join the Astros family,” Click said in a statement. “The Astros are a progressive and innovative organization with a deeply talented group in the front office. I am grateful to Jim Crane and the Astros for giving me this opportunity to help lead this team to more championships.”
Click replaces Jeff Luhnow, who the team fired after an investigation revealed that the Astros cheated by using a sign-stealing technique. In addition, they also fired manager AJ Hinch. “James has had an impressive career,” Houston owner Jim Crane said. “He is a respected leader who has progressed in this game across all aspects of Baseball Operations, and he has built great relationships with both front office and clubhouse personnel. I am thrilled to introduce him as our new General Manager. He is a great addition to the Astros.”
Italian Team Retires Kobe Bryant’s Number
An Italian basketball team retired number 24 to honor late Kobe Bryant during a pregame ceremony on Wednesday. In addition, this team is where Bryant’s father, Joe Bryant, made his Italian debut back in 1984. “You began to play here and as an adult you made us dream. Our colors are with you in the sky,” read a huge banner in Italian. Then, the team lifted a golden Lakers jersey with the number 24 to the ceiling of the arena.
Frederik Anderson Suffers Neck Injury
Maple Leafs’ goaltender Frederik Anderson suffered a neck injury during Monday’s loss against the Panthers. He left early in the first quarter and did not return to the game. In addition, he will not travel with the team for Wednesday’s game against the Rangers. The team also considers him day-to-day. “He went through that whole process,” Andersen said concerning concussion testing. “My understanding is the results were positive on that. Given the nature of the injury, we wanted to take caution and give it time.”
LSU’s Donte Starks Suspended
LSU freshman linebacker Donte Sparks was suspended from the team after his arrest on a gun possession charge. Police found Sparks, along with a group of other men, after investigating a complaint about an armed drug deal. While police tried to detain the men, Sparks ran, getting caught by the police. They then found a loaded handgun in his backpack.
Following his arrest, LSU coach Ed Orgeron announced that they had suspended Sparks indefinitely for an unspecified violation. However, they were aware of the arrest and declined any request to comment further. At this moment, it is unclear if Sparks has an attorney to respond to a request to comment.
